“ Dans Mbira Dance sorti en 1999, Francis Bebey s'adonne ici à son instrument favori, la sanza ou mbira, l'instrument dont il aimait à raconter qu'il permettait aux morts et aux vivants de dialoguer. Enregistré avec ses deux fils Toups Bebey et Patrick Bebey, cet album essentiellement instrumental (mais il chante parfois de sa voix basse et légère tout à la fois) voyage dans l'univers des Esprits yoruba, parle du Christ et rend hommage au photographe Pierre Verger, grand amoureux de l'Afrique. Il adapte également un poème du sénégalais Birago Diop, "Breathe", un emprunt littéraire qui en rappelle de précédents et démontre une fois encore, sa vision d'art total qu'il a tenté de faire valoir tout au long de son existence...
