Titulaire d’un doctorat d’ethnomusicologie de l’Université du Texas, Austin, il a enseigné dans plusieurs universités (Texas, Californie) et a reçu le soutien de la Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research pour la rédaction de son ouvrage, Recollecting from the past, consacré au maresaka de Madagascar. Il a également écrit des chapitres dans des ouvrages collectifs : «~Environmentalism in Malagasy Popular Songs~» dans Island Musics, «~Material Media of Maresaka : Tromba Spirit Possession on the East Coast of Madagascar~» dans Music, Religion, and Ritual in Africa et «~Wildness in the Heart of Town~» dans Mementos, Artifacts, and Hallucinations from the Ethnographer’s Tent. He received the PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin. Thereafter he taught as a Lecturer at University of Texas, University of California (Santa Barbara), and was awarded a year-long Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research Richard Carley Hunt Fellowship for the preparation of his book on maresaka from Madagascar, Recollecting from the past, Musical Practice and Spirit Possession on the East Coast of Madagascar published in 2002. He wrote chapters of various books, “Environmentalism in Malagasy Popular Songs” in Island Musics, “Material Media of Maresaka : Tromba Spirit Possession on the East Coast of Madagascar” in Music, Religion, and Ritual in Africa, “Wildness in the Heart of Town” in Mementos, Artifacts, and Hallucinations from the Ethnographer’s Tent.
