En 1964, le Makgona Tsohle Band (ou Makhona Tsohle Band), groupe de la maison Mavuthela, la division des musiques noires de Gallo, électrifie un nouveau style, le [mbaqanga, qui fusionne kwela, marabi music, sonorités traditionnelles zulu, xhosa et sotho : Il signe alors ce premier album qui fait du mbaqanga, la musique phare de la période. Le genre obtient une reconnaissance officielle à l’occasion du Castle Jazz festival à l’Orlando Stadium de Soweto la même année. Composante instrumentale du groupe Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, cette formation mythique formée de Lucky Monama, West Nkosi, Joseph Makwela , Vivian Ngubane et Marks Mankwane va contribuer à populariser la musique sud-africaine sur toutes les scènes du monde à partir des années 1980.
In 1964, the Makgona Tsohle Band (or Makhona Tsohle Band), group of Mavuthela, the black music division of Gallo, electrified a new style, [mbaqanga, which merged kwela, marabi music, traditional zulu, xhosa and Sotho sounds. They then signed this first album which maked mbaqanga, music the flagship of the period. The genre got official recognition at Castle Jazz festival at Orlando Stadium in Soweto in the same year. Instrumental Component of Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens , this mythical band formed by Lucky Monama, West Nkosi, Joseph Makwela, Vivian Ngubane and Marks Mankwane contributed to popularize the music of South Africa on all scenes of the world since the 1980’s.
