Spotlight on Kenyan Music

"

Contemporary songs from Kenya, rooted in East African musical tradition, sung in Kiswahili, kikamba, Luhya and other local dialects. Featuring Suzzana Owiyo and Achien’g Abura.

‘Spotlight on Kenyan Music’ is a programme for the development and promotion of Kenyan afro-fusion music, initiated by Alliance Française de Nairobi with the support of the Embassy of France and Total Kenya.

It aims to contribute to the recognition of the country’s musical identity at national, regional and international level. The identification of emerging talents is pivotal to this project in order to ensure a sustainable development of the local musical industry.

A group of leading artists and producers (Achien’g Abura, Suzzana Owiyo, Suzzanne Kibukosya, John Katana and Tabu Osusa) and the Department of Culture, together with Alliance Française form the steering committee of the project. Through a series of auditions held in the various Kenyan provinces, a selection of young talents were identified, eleven of whom are featured on this Volume 1 of the Spotlight on Kenyan Music compilation.

The compositions on this album give you a taste of the rich variety of musical traditions and styles which have influenced the songs performed by these promising young artists. The last track on the album, ‘Wakati ni sasa’, is a signature song for this project, bringing together top Kenyan voices. It is a symbol for renewed musical direction and a cry of hope for a better tomorrow for Africa.
