Dans les années 1960, il monte son propre groupe, les Cordettes puis rejoint en 1962, les Blue Notes de Chris Mc Gregor. Le groupe s’exile en Europe en 1964 puis se sépare l’année suivante.
Louis Moholo joue alors au sein du Brotherhood of Breath, le big band monté par Chris McGregor mais collabore également avec de nombreux artistes : Irene Schweitzer, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann et Harry Miller. Il monte plusieurs groupes, The Unrecorded Unit, Spirit Rejoice avec Kenny Wheeler et Evan Parket et Viva la Black, un septet.
En 1993, il tourne dans toute l’Afrique du Sud et enregistre à cette occasion, Freedom Tour. Louis Moholo a joué avec Mike Osborne et avec Evan Parker en 1999. Il a participé au Dedication Orchestra formé par les musiciens de l’exil et est également membre du London Improvisors Orchestra. Louis Moholo is a jazz drummer. He set up his own band , the Cordettes in the sixties, before joining the Blue Notes directed by Chris Mc Gregor in 1962. The group settled in Europe in 1964 and disbanded the next year. Louis Moholo joined then the Brotherhood of Breath, the big band set up by Chris Mc Gregor , bringing his personal touch , full of improvisation. He played as well with Irene Schweitzer, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann and Harry Miller and formed his own bands : the Unrecorded Unit, Spirit Rejoice with Kenny Wheeler and Evan Parker and Viva la black. In 1993, he toured all over South Africa and recorded then Freedom Tour. He has been participating to the Dedication Orchestra (formed by the exiled musicians).
