Miriam Makeba & the Skylarks, Vol. 1
Entre 1956 et 1959, à la demande de Gallo, Miriam Makeba prend la tête du groupe vocal féminin The Skylarks formé par Mary Rabotapi, Abigail Kubeka et Mummy Girl Nketle, occasionnellement complété par une voix de basse (le plus souvent Sam Ngakane).
Epaulé par des musiciens de talent comme le flûtiste Spokes Mashiyane (le roi de la kwela) et le clarinettiste-saxophoniste Dan Hill, le groupe chante en xhosa, anglais et zulu un répertoire au carrefour du mbombela, de la kwela et des styles vocaux sud-africains et se fait connaître avec deux titres, « Hush » et « Inkomo Zodwa ». C’est la grande époque des quartets vocaux et du mbombela, jazz sud-africain mêlant chants zulu, jazz vocal, gospel, kwela et swing. Le groupe prendra fin en 1959, quand Miriam Makeba quitte l’Afrique du Sud pour venir au festival de Venise. Elle ne reverra son pays que 30 ans plus tard.

Backed by talented musicians as flutist Spokes Mashiyane (king of kwela) and clarinettist-saxophonist Dan Hill, the group sang in xhosa, English and zulu a repertoire blending mbombela, kwela and south african vocal styles. They made famous with two hits , « Hush » et « Inkomo Zodwa ». The group stopped in 1959, when Miriam Makeba left South Africa to attend Venice Festival. She didn’t know then she would come back home thirty years later.
