Dans une étude détaillée couvrant le XIX° et le XX° siècle, Music, modernity and the global imagination: South Africa and the West, l’anthropologue et ethnomusicologue Veit Erlmann analyse le mode de création d’un imaginaire chez les sud-africains noirs, les Européens et les Afro-Américains. A cette fin, il explore deux épisodes marquants de l’histoire de la musique sud-africaine. Le premier évoque une tournée de deux chorales sud-africaines en Europe et aux Etats-Unis au début des années 1890. Le second concerne les relations entre les Majors et le groupe Ladysmith Black Mambazo après l’enregistrement de l’album Graceland en 1986 de Paul Simon. Ce livre disponible uniquement en anglais se présente en fait comme un dialogue transatlantique et analyse les implications de celui-ci dans les domaines de l’art. In Music, modernity and the global imagination: South Africa and the West, a detailed study covering the XIXth century and the XXth century, the anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Veit Erlmann analyzes the mode of creation of an imagination among the South African blacks, the Europeans and the African Americans.

On that purpose, he investigates two striking episodes of the history of the South African music. The first one evokes a tour of two South African choirs in Europe and in the United States at the beginning of 1890s. The second concerns the relations between Majors and Ladysmith Black Mambazo after the recording of the album Graceland by Paul Simon in 1986.

This book appears in fact as a transatlantic dialogue and analyzes its implications in the field of african music.
