Nothing’s In Vain

Enregistré, mixé et masterisé entre Dakar (Studio Xippi), Paris (Studio Mega, Studio Twin) et New York (Sterling Sound, Studio B5 Atomic), Nothing’s in vain (Coono du réér) (le travail paie toujours) de Youssou Ndour réunit, outre ses musiciens, plusieurs invités de talents comme Pascal Obispo, Manu Katché, Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Sam Stoner, Matthew Vaughan, Régis Gizavo, Doudou Ndiaye Rose…«~You~» y adapte «~Il n’y a pas d’amour heureux~», un texte de Louis Aragon mis en musique par Georges Brassens.

Dans cet album qu’il a voulu acoustique, Youssou Ndour laisse entendre des instruments traditionnels comme la kora (harpe lyre mandingue à 21 cordes), le xalam (luth wolof sénégalais de 3 à 5 cordes), le riti (violon peul sénégalais à 1 corde), le balafon (xylophone africain en bois) et bien sûr les sabars wolofs (percussions) et le tama des Laobés (tambour parlant ou talking drum des bûcherons sénégalais).

Objet d’un single, «~So many men~» (tant de monde) est chanté en duo avec Pascal Obispo qui en est le réalisateur. On y retrouve le parolier français Lionel Florence et le guitariste anglais Sam Stoner. «~Genné~» est une chanson pour les sans-abri tandis que «~Li ma weesu~» (comme dans un miroir), une réflexion sur le temps qui passe, est réalisé avec ses amis de longue date, Habib Faye, Kabou Guèye et Max Calo.

Youssou Ndour y parle aussi d’amour («~Mbëggéél noonu la~» (l’amour en est ainsi) ou «~C’est l’amour~») et de respect («~Yaru~»).
