During several months, he learnt mandingo guitar with Djelymady Tounkara of the Super Rail Band. This book provides portraits of major mandingo artists (Salif Keita, Oumou Sangaré, Ali Farka Touré, Habib Koité, Sali Sidibé, etc) but analyses the cultural ans social rôle of griots in mandingo society, the african roots of American music , the question of modernity and identity.
